Ginseng tea: the healthy drink with historic roots
Ginseng tea is one of the most famous tea varieties, but do you know where it comes from and its health benefits?
Technically, Ginseng does not come from China or a traditional tea leaf plant. It is, in fact, a herbal infusion which uses the root of perennial plant belonging to the ivy family. There are several varieties of the Ginseng plant used for tea, including Korean, American and even Siberian.
What are the health benefits?
Ginseng has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of ailments and, not surprisingly, Ginseng tea has also been shown to have health benefits.
The root contains ginsenosides, which are thought to combat free radicals in the body, plus other vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Research has shown that Ginseng tea contains vitamin C which boosts the body’s immune system. As part of a healthy, balanced diet Ginseng tea can help with weight loss as it is a low-fat alternative to milky coffee or breakfast tea.
What does it taste like?
Each variety and blend has its own unique properties, but generally Korean and American Ginseng teas are known for having a sweeter, full-bodied taste with a hint of fruit. Siberian Ginseng has a more greener taste, but it is worth giving them all a try to find your favourite.
To make the perfect cup of Ginseng tea, you need a tea infuser or filter. Add hot water and leave the tea to steep for five to 10 minutes, depending how strong you want it to taste.
