Earl Grey Tea

Earl Grey is a very popular tea blend. Commonly served without milk but just as delicious with, Earl Grey makes for a very satisfying cup. Expect notes of maltiness perfectly blending with the citrus of the bergamot.  We have put together the Grey family, a collection of teas based around the original Earl Grey tea, but each one offers a different finish.

What is Earl Grey tea?

Earl Grey actually falls into the category of flavoured teas. It’s one of the most recognised teas in the world and is flavoured with bergamot and orange blossom. It has a citrusy taste that’s paired with tea leaves such as sencha and rooibos

Where did Earl Grey tea originate from?

Earl Grey was invented in China but it was popularised by the British. Early Chinese masters were always experimenting with ways to make teas more exotic and flavoursome, and it’s believed that Earl Grey was created as a gift for Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl of Grey and Prime Minister of the UK in the 1830s.

What does Earl Grey taste like?

Because of the flavourful notes added to Earl Grey, it has a complex flavour. It has a balance of floral, sweet and bitter notes, with a full-bodied, rich tea background.

Do you drink Earl Grey with milk?

Earl Grey pairs wonderfully with milk and can also be sweetened with sugar or honey to smooth out the tannins in the tea.

Does Earl Grey contain caffeine?

The caffeine content in a cup of Earl Grey is similar to black tea, as this blend tends to be made with a black tea base. It can contain anything from 14-61 mg of caffeine per cup.

How to brew Earl Grey

Flavoured teas can vary in brewing times and temperatures, so it's best to consult the packaging for the tea you choose. However, in most cases, Earl Grey is brewed using boiling water and steeped for between 3-4 minutes for a black tea-based Earl Grey or 2-3 minutes for green tea.
